Completed Project: Close-Board Fencing and Garden Makeover in Barnet EN4
This back garden in Barnet EN4 was completely rebuilt by the Verdant Vision Pro team. The family wanted privacy, a low-maintenance lawn and a proper seating area by the house. Here is the whole project, step by step, from the old garden to the finished result.
Before

Before: an old, weathered fence, patchy bare soil and a narrow concrete path.
In progress

Step 1: ground cleared and levelled, new close-board fence on concrete posts and gravel boards, a new timber side gate, and the first battens of the slatted screen on the brick wall.

Step 2: the L-shaped bench seating built in blockwork, with timber seat tops.

Step 3: benches rendered, and the light porcelain patio laid outside the doors with spacers for even joints.

Step 4: a timber subframe built for the decking platform between the benches.

Step 5: weed membrane laid over the subframe.

Step 6: grey composite decking fitted, with the timber slatted screen and bench backs finished.

Step 7: stepping stones and timber-edged planting beds in place, and the ground raked and levelled ready for turf.
After

The finished garden: close-board fencing, porcelain patio, new lawn, stepping stones and the decking seating area.

New close-board fence with a planting bed along its length, and stepping stones across the lawn.

Looking back towards the house across the new lawn.

The patio and bench seating outside the doors.

Decking, lawn and patio, all in one view.

The finished seating corner: rendered benches, stained timber tops and the slatted screen.

Detail: composite decking, crisp rendered edges and stained timber.
What we built
Close-board timber fencing with concrete posts and concrete gravel boards, plus a new timber side gate. A light grey porcelain patio and porcelain stepping stones. New turf. Timber-edged planting beds along the fence and wall. Rendered L-shaped bench seating with stained timber tops, a grey composite decking platform, and a stained timber slatted screen along the brick wall.
Why close-board fencing on concrete posts
Concrete posts do not rot, and the gravel boards keep the timber off the soil, so the fence lasts far longer than an all-timber fence. Close-board panels give full privacy and stand up well to wind.
