Porcelain vs Indian Sandstone Patios: Which Suits Your Barnet Garden?
Updated: 6 hours ago
Porcelain and Indian sandstone are the two patio materials we are asked about most in Barnet and Enfield. Both look great when they are laid properly, but they suit different gardens and different owners. Here is an honest comparison, using two of our own local jobs.
Porcelain: clean, modern and low maintenance

Look: consistent colour and sharp, straight edges. Ideal for modern homes and large-format layouts.
Upkeep: very low. Porcelain does not absorb water, so moss, stains and algae wipe off far more easily.
Grip: outdoor porcelain is made with a textured surface, but always choose a slab rated for exterior use.
Cost: usually more to buy than sandstone, and harder to cut, so labour is higher too.
Example: our porcelain front patio in Barnet EN5 was chosen because the owner wanted something bright that stays clean at the front of the house.
Indian sandstone: natural, warm and characterful

Look: every slab is different, with natural colour variation. Suits period houses and traditional gardens.
Upkeep: it is porous, so it weathers and can green over in shady spots. Sealing and an occasional clean keep it looking good.
Grip: the riven surface gives good natural grip.
Cost: usually cheaper to buy than porcelain and quicker to cut.
Example: our new lawn and sandstone patio in High Barnet EN5, where natural stone suited the Victorian terrace.
Which should you choose?
Choose porcelain if you want a modern look, the lowest maintenance and a shady or north-facing patio that would green over.
Choose sandstone if you want a natural, traditional look, have a period home or want to keep the material cost down.
Whichever you choose, the base matters more than the slab. A cheap base will let either material sink or crack. Read what a fair porcelain patio quote should include, or see more on our patio page.
